NEW Statewide EMV Chip Cards

Your credit union will be implementing “chip card” technology in our Statewide PlatinumVisa credit cards. You probably have read about chip cards (also called EMV’s) lately, especially the vast improvement in security they offer. The new chip cards reflect a shift from magnetic-stripe credit cards to chip-and-pin cards. The chip-based cards require insertion of the card into a terminal throughout the entire transaction. This new technology is being implemented to cut down on fraudulent transactions drastically. We’ll be re-issuing Visa credit cards, along with new instructions on the proper use of the new cards, since they do work a little differently at the check-out. Just one more way your Credit Union is keeping you safe!

Here is the most important information you need to know about EMV.

What is EMV?
EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa) is micro-computer chip technology that provides increased security capability. EMV chip cards are equipped with a small metallic square on the front of the card that holds card information. Originating in Europe, EMV technology has been instrumental in preventing the spread of credit card fraud.

How does it secure information?
EMV chip cards secure card information by ensuring unauthorized users cannot access its data. EMV chip cards carry security credentials - known as keys - that help prevent skimming and card cloning.

What is the benefit of EMV?
One of the biggest benefits is the reduction in credit card fraud resulting from counterfeit cards.

Will the EMV chip cards have the magnetic strip?
Yes, your new EMV chip card will include the magnetic strip, giving you dual-purpose technology to enhance your purchasing capabilities. This means that you will be able to use the EMV processing and the magnetic strip at all other locations.
